Midwest and Jersey Accents

Posted Sep 8, 2011

When people ask me to do a particular accent, there’s a part of me that wants to give a massive disclaimer:
Not Everyone In This City Sounds Like This. This is just One Person, some of the time.

This video is an example of why I started learning accents in the first place -to be able to embody characters who are very different from myself in many ways, speech being one of them.

Not Everyone in the midwest sounds like Eunice, but Eunice sure does. Same thing with this Dad from the 1992 Jersey Girl. There’s a great little scene in there which I changed a bit and embellished.

Great resource for Jersey Accents, by the way, so we’ll post it on the Film Resources page.

When you’re working on a character, remember to keep it Personal, rather than a generalization of an accent.

Have Fun!
